The victim, Callie Coltrain Coward, was driving a Toyota SUV eastbound when the collision occurred. According to investigators, Tiffany Phillips, a 35-year-old woman from Lexington, South Carolina, was operating a Mercedes SUV westbound. In an attempt to pass traffic, Phillips merged into the eastbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision with Coward’s vehicle.

Callie Coltrain Coward was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, marking the event as a devastating loss to her community. Emergency Medical Services quickly responded, deploying three ambulances, a quick response vehicle, and Dare MedFlight to assist with the situation.

In the aftermath of the crash, Tiffany Phillips was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of her injuries, whose severity is currently unknown. A passenger in Phillips’ vehicle, Josiah Myer, 40 years old, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was flown to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. In a fortunate turn of events, an 8-month-old girl who was also a passenger in Phillips’ vehicle was transported to Outer Banks Health Hospital but was reportedly unharmed.
