Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina – An 84-year-old man, James Hofler, tragically died after being struck by a United States Postal Service (USPS) vehicle on May 19, 2023. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. in the 2000 block of Portsmouth Street while Hofler was walking across the road to check his mailbox.

According to the investigation, the vehicle involved in the accident was a 2021 Mercedes-Benz mail carrier van operated by 53-year-old Amy Hudler, a resident of Colington, NC. While backing northbound on Portsmouth Street, Hudler hit Hofler, who had been crossing from east to west. Following the incident, she promptly called for emergency services and cooperated with law enforcement.

Emergency responders from Dare County EMS and the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Hofler sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head for treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to a more advanced medical facility on the mainland, where he sadly passed away on May 22, 2023. According to his obituary, Hofler died at East Carolina University Health Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

James Hofler was well-known in the community as a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a long-time resident of Kill Devil Hills. The Kill Devil Hills Police Department expressed their condolences to Hofler’s family and emphasized the importance of public vigilance and caution to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

In the aftermath of the accident, Amy Hudler has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing, and details regarding the specific events leading up to the collision are still being examined.

The tragic incident has raised awareness around pedestrian safety and the responsibilities of drivers, especially in residential areas where many people may be walking or biking. Authorities are urging community members to remain alert while on the roads, particularly in areas with frequent foot traffic.

As investigations continue, local law enforcement officials are committed to ensuring that the community is informed and safe. They encourage residents to report any reckless or negligent behavior on the roads to help maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Community members are reflecting on the loss of Hofler, a figure who dedicated many years to his service in the Navy and contributed to the fabric of life in Kill Devil Hills.
