MANTEO, N.C. — The Manteo High School girls volleyball team is one win from a state championship. The N.C. High School Athletic Association has set Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m. for the 2A final, and the opponent is Cherokee, the No. 1 seed on the other side of the bracket.
Manteo enters as the No. 2 seed. The pairing became official Wednesday morning, when the association released dates and start times for all eight classification finals after the regional round.
The match will be played in Gore Arena on the campus of Campbell University, which is hosting the volleyball finals for the first time. A year ago the title matches were split between two other campuses, with Lawrence-Joel Coliseum at Wake Forest and Reynolds Coliseum at NC State sharing the load.
Saturday’s 2A match sits in the middle of a packed final day at the arena. Cardinal Gibbons and Ronald W. Reagan open at 11 a.m. for the 7A crown. Falls Lake and Robbinsville follow Manteo at 4 p.m. for the 1A title, and J.H. Rose and North Iredell close the weekend at 6:30 p.m. in 6A.
Four other finals are set for Friday at the same arena. Uwharrie and Lake Norman Charter start things at noon in 4A, Wake Prep and North Stanly meet at 2:30 p.m. in 3A, Seaforth and Hickory play at 5 p.m. in 5A, and Green Level and West Forsyth finish the night in the 8A final at 7:30 p.m.
For Outer Banks fans planning the long drive west for Saturday’s match, venue and parking maps for the arena have been posted ahead of the weekend, and the 2A final is the only match on the schedule with an Outer Banks team in it.
