Newport News, VA — Billy C. Snyder, a master carpenter, accomplished guitarist, and beloved community member, passed away at the age of 67 on April 3, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia. His death marks the loss of a talented individual who made significant contributions through both his professional work and personal passions.
Snyder was born and raised in Newport News and completed his high school education at Warwick High School. He later finished his schooling through the U.S. Armed Forces Institute while stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. Following his educational pursuits, he devoted three years to military service, which helped shape his character and work ethic.
After completing his military service, Snyder relocated to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Here, he established himself as a master carpenter, contributing to the construction of numerous homes throughout the area. His craftsmanship was evident in the quality of his work, and he took great pride in the buildings he helped create. Alongside his professional achievements, Snyder was passionate about surfing, dedicating much of his free time to the sport. He continued to enjoy surfing throughout his life, reflecting his commitment to outdoor activities and a love for the ocean.
In 2012, Snyder moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where he continued to cultivate his artistic passions. He was not only a skilled carpenter but also an accomplished guitarist. Music played a significant role in his life; he enjoyed playing alongside family and friends, and he frequently participated in music sessions that brought joy to those around him. Snyder is fondly remembered for his humor, as loved ones remark that he has “joined a bluegrass band in heaven.”

Snyder was preceded in death by his father, John A. Snyder, known as Jack, who passed away in 2005. He is survived by his son, Dylan, who resides in Manteo, North Carolina; his mother, Betty Snyder; two brothers, Richard (Stacey) and John Snyder I (Trip); a sister, Cheryl England (Dan); his significant other, Sherry Caruana; and his beloved dog, Daisy Mae.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on May 17, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Weymouth Funeral Home. This gathering will provide an opportunity for loved ones to celebrate Snyder’s life and share cherished memories.
