Newport News, Virginia Remembers a Local Hero: Billy C. Snyder Passes Away at 67

In a bittersweet turn of events, Newport News has lost one of its cherished sons with the passing of Billy C. Snyder on April 3, 2025, at the age of 67. Born and raised in this vibrant city, Billy’s legacy will forever echo through the lives he touched.

A Local Man with Global Experience

Billy’s journey began in Newport News, where he attended Warwick High School before completing his education through the U.S. Armed Forces Institute in Ft Campbell, Kentucky. He proudly served in the military for three years, gaining invaluable experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a strong sense of duty.

The Call of the Outer Banks

After his time in the military, Billy set his sails toward the stunning shores of the Outer Banks, North Carolina. There, he discovered his true passion as a Master Carpenter, crafting homes that showcased not just his skills, but also his deep love for his craft. Each building project told a story of dedication and artistry—a labor of love that many in the community admired.

Surfer at Heart

Outside of work, Billy dedicated much of his leisure time to honing his surfing skills, riding the waves with a sense of joy and freedom that many envied. Surfing wasn’t just a pastime; it was a profound part of his identity, and he continued to enjoy it right up until the end of his life.

Back to Norfolk

In 2012, Billy relocated to Norfolk, Virginia, where he continued to make an impact. Not only was he known for his craftsmanship, but he also held a remarkable talent as an accomplished guitarist. Whether jamming with family or strumming away at home, his love for bluegrass music was a constant source of joy and connection with those around him.

A Heart for Community

Beyond the beach and music, Billy was deeply committed to nurturing the next generation. As a Scout Master, he played a pivotal role in guiding countless young men toward their Eagle Scout rank. His dedication, patience, and mentorship were a beacon for many aspiring scouts, fostering their growth and aiding in their personal development.

Adventurer at Heart

When not guiding young scouts, Billy could be found indulging in his love for the great outdoors. He cherished activities like duck hunting and camping, always seeking new adventures under the open sky.

A Final Gift

Remembering Billy

Billy leaves behind a family that will forever cherish his memory. He is survived by his beloved son, Dylan, of Manteo, North Carolina, as well as his devoted mother, Betty Snyder. His siblings—two brothers, Richard (Stacey) and John (Trip), and a sister, Cheryl England (Dan)—are all part of the legacy he leaves behind. His significant other, Sherry Caruana, along with his cherished dog, Daisy Mae, will miss him deeply.

Celebration of Life

A remembrance and celebration of Billy’s life will be organized at a later date, allowing friends and family to come together and share their fondest memories of a man who touched so many lives. Newport News has lost a stalwart member of its community, but his spirit will continue to guide those he inspired.
