MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Honor Huff, the sharpshooting guard who spent last season at West Virginia, intends to put his name in the NCAA transfer portal while he presses a court case to win one more year of college basketball.
His representatives announced the plan Friday. A hearing on his eligibility is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the suit Huff brought against the college sports governing body this month in Monongalia County Circuit Court.
The 5-foot-10 guard began at VMI in 2021, sat out the 2022-23 season after moving to Chattanooga and earned All-Southern Conference honors twice there. At West Virginia last winter he started all 35 games and averaged 16.5 points, making 35.4 percent of his tries from beyond the arc.
Huff argues that because of the redshirt year, 2026-27 would be only his fifth season actually playing. His complaint, brought under state law and the West Virginia antitrust statute, asks the court to stop the NCAA from enforcing eligibility limits that keep him off the floor.
His case is one of many. The NCAA adopted a rule over the summer giving athletes from the 2023 class onward five years to play, but it did not cover players who entered in 2022, and judges in several states have granted injunctions to athletes who sued. A federal judge in West Virginia earlier sided with former Mountaineers Brenen Lorient and Javan Buchanan, a ruling the NCAA has appealed.
