Zehner Lays Out Senate District 1 Priorities for OBX

NAGS HEAD, N.C. — Democratic N.C. Senate District 1 candidate Melissa Zehner, answering a written questionnaire ahead of the Nov. 3 general election, put public schools, lower living costs for year-round families and stronger coastal advocacy at the top of her Outer Banks agenda.

Zehner said she would push for steadier state school funding, better teacher pay in rural districts and upgrades to aging school buildings. On household costs, she backed workforce housing incentives, more childcare support and rural broadband buildout so families can stay in the communities where they work.

Those themes match pressure already documented on the Outer Banks, where a year-round workforce housing shortage has reached crisis level and local employers including the hospital and school district report trouble recruiting staff who cannot afford local real estate. Broadband expansion to every Outer Banks community is also listed among the region’s economic needle-movers for remote-work jobs.

For Hatteras Island and other exposed stretches, Zehner said she would fight for coastal resilience money in places such as Rodanthe and Buxton and keep attention on N.C. 12’s weakest links. N.C. 12 is the primary north-south spine from Corolla to Hatteras Village, and the corridor through Hatteras Island is a narrow two-lane road with frequent storm damage and seasonal sand overwash, making storm repair speed a standing Outer Banks fight with the state transportation department.

She also tied fisheries policy to people who still work the water and said too many District 1 decisions are made in Raleigh without someone who lives here in the room. Republican Jerry Tillett is the other name on the District 1 ballot; as of mid-October he had not returned the same questionnaire.

Early voting for the November contest is underway statewide. District 1 covers northeastern North Carolina counties that include Dare County’s barrier-island towns, where housing, N.C. 12 access and ferry-linked communities remain everyday campaign issues.
