State law enacted this summer directs the NCDOT Ferry Division to establish and begin collecting tolls on all ferry routes starting Jan. 1, 2027. The law means tolls will soon be required on the system currently untolled ferry routes: Currituck-Knotts Island, Bayview-Aurora, Hatteras-Ocracoke and Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach. Tolls are already collected on the division other routes.

Today career fair was originally set to happen in September but had to be rescheduled after last month nor easter.

Hatteras Village is the southernmost community on Hatteras Island and departure point for the free Ocracoke Island ferry. Local planning material describes it as the end of the road on Hatteras Island, with a free ferry to Ocracoke and a major charter sportfishing fleet. The NC Department of Transportation (OBX Ferry / NC-12) controls the critical NC-12 corridor and ferry system; OBX road access depends on NCDOT decisions on bridge maintenance and storm repair.

Ferry service run by NC DOT also links Ocracoke to Cedar Island and Swan Quarter mainland routes, so staffing for toll collection reaches beyond a single terminal and into how island communities move people and vehicles once statewide tolling begins in 2027.
