FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Philip Rivers said after a 42-35 loss to Glenwood on Friday night that he recently interviewed with North Carolina State about becoming the Wolfpack’s next head coach, and that there is nothing further to announce.
The former Wolfpack quarterback and longtime NFL passer is widely viewed as a leading candidate to succeed Dave Doeren, whose job opened about two weeks ago when he was dismissed in his 14th season. Rivers said he met and visited with Wolfpack officials earlier this week, that he has known some of the people involved for some time, and that the conversation went well.
He would not say whether Friday’s game was his last with St. Michael Catholic, the Fairhope program he has led since 2021 after stepping away from the NFL following the 2020 season. He said he wanted to stay present in the moment after a playoff run he had been eager to make, and that if this chapter is over, much was accomplished over six years and the program would be left better than he found it.
Glenwood ended St. Michael Catholic’s season 42-35 on Friday, Nov. 6, in Alabama. Rivers was visibly moved afterward as questions turned from the final score to his next job.
North Carolina State has also interviewed Russell Wilson, another former Wolfpack and NFL quarterback, as the search has continued. Rivers immediately became a candidate when the opening appeared, and by last weekend he was described as the focus of the search.
No hire has been announced. Rivers said there was nothing else to report beyond the visit itself, leaving the next step unresolved for a former ACC Player of the Year after six seasons on the Fairhope sideline.
