MANTEO, N.C. — Dare County government on the Outer Banks will go dark for two November holidays, and households that count on county trash service should plan ahead for a changed pickup routine during Thanksgiving week. The county announced the dates over the weekend.
Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, Nov. 11, and every county office will be shut that day. The closing reaches the C&D Landfill in Manns Harbor, the transfer station in Buxton and the recycle yard in Manteo as well. Normal hours pick back up on Thursday, Nov. 12.
The holiday will not disturb curbside pickup. Household cans get picked up on their usual days from Nov. 9 through Nov. 13. Business dumpsters in Kitty Hawk and the unincorporated parts of the county will be emptied on Monday, Nov. 9, and again on Friday, Nov. 13.
Thanksgiving brings a longer break. The county will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26, and on Friday, Nov. 27, and regular operations return Monday, Nov. 30. For the holiday week of Nov. 23-27, Dare County Public Works will run a revised residential schedule in Kitty Hawk and the unincorporated villages, Hatteras Island included. Anyone in those areas should look over the new calendar before the week starts so cans go out on the right morning, since a missed pickup could mean waiting several days for the next truck.
County crews only serve Kitty Hawk and the unincorporated areas. Homes inside the limits of Manteo, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Southern Shores or Duck get trash service from their own town, so residents there should check with town hall for any holiday changes.
