Wild Horse Euthanized After Vehicle Collision in the Outer Banks

In a heartbreaking incident that has captured the attention of animal lovers, a wild horse known as Bullwinkle was euthanized on Saturday after he was struck by an off-road vehicle while roaming the sands of the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

Details of the Incident

Bullwinkle, a 10-year-old stallion, represented one of the last surviving members of the Banker horse breed, which is critically endangered with only about 200 individuals left in the wild. These unique horses have inhabited the Outer Banks since the 1500s, descending from European horses brought over by Spanish explorers.

Condition of the Horse

Following the collision, Bullwinkle sustained severe injuries that led to his humane euthanasia. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund, which has worked to protect and manage the horse herd in the area, expressed their sorrow on social media, stating: “He was in the prime of his life, and went from being a symbol of what it means to be wild and free to a tragic example of how irresponsible, reckless human behavior can cause pain, suffering, and irreparable damage to the herd in an instant.”

Legal Action Taken

In the wake of the incident, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man named Porter Williamson, 57, of Chesapeake, Virginia. He was charged with resisting a public officer after initially fleeing the scene but later returning as deputies were removing the vehicle registered to him. Authorities reported that he attempted to evade capture again but was apprehended shortly after.

Additional Charges

Another individual, Rhonda Williamson, was also charged with resisting a public officer. Her relationship to Porter has not been identified. After their arrests, both individuals were released on bond: Porter for $10,000 and Rhonda for $5,000.

Community Reaction

The untimely death of Bullwinkle has sparked a wave of sadness and outrage among the local community and wildlife advocates. Many have taken to social media to express their condolences and call for greater awareness regarding the safety of wildlife in the Outer Banks.

Importance of the Banker Horse

The Banker horses are not just a local treasure; they are a vital part of the natural heritage and ecosystem of the Outer Banks. As the days progress, the call for increased protection measures for both the horses and their habitat grows stronger, emphasizing the need for responsible behavior from visitors and residents alike.

Bullwinkle’s legacy will undoubtedly linger in the hearts of those who hold the wild and free spirit of the Banker horses dear.
