Possible Tropical Storm Debby Looms Over Outer Banks

Reports suggest that what is expected to become Tropical Storm Debby could make its way toward our beautiful shores around the middle of next week. Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson emphasized, “This potential cyclone has significant uncertainty in the track and intensity. Even with that uncertainty, it’s never too soon to start preparing just in case.”

The National Hurricane Center has been issuing advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone Four, currently making its way across Cuba. Forecasts indicate it may strengthen into a tropical depression by Saturday morning as it enters the Gulf of Mexico, eventually aiming for a landfall on Florida’s west coast on Sunday. After that, it’s expected to cruise through southern Georgia before splashing back into the Atlantic, inching along the coastlines of South Carolina and North Carolina in the early part of next week.
While tropical storm conditions bring along worries like sustained winds above 35 mph and heavy rainfall, the Outer Banks could start feeling the storm’s effects as early as Tuesday morning, though it may be more likely that the weather won’t start to deteriorate until Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service has highlighted that the primary threats at this stage are heavy rain, flooding, and the possibility of rip currents forming along our shores.
Things to Watch For
For those with plans for an adventure along the Outer Banks in the coming week, it’s wise to keep a close eye on the forecast. If Tropical Storm Debby doesn’t intensify too much, evacuations are likely to remain off the table, but some disruptions may arise. Ferry services to and from Ocracoke Island could face delays, and high surf conditions can cause some travel challenges along N.C. 12, particularly on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke.
