Manteo, NC: A Wake-Up Call on Highway 64

This morning in Manteo, things took an unexpected turn when local deputies had to respond to a report of a careless driver on Highway 64. The call came in around 7:15 a.m., and deputies rushed to the scene, only to discover a vehicle that was temporarily stuck at a red light at the intersection of Bowsertown and Highway 64. What caught their attention was the driver, who seemed to be asleep behind the wheel. Talk about a wake-up call!

Discoveries Made on Arrival

Upon reaching the vehicle, the deputies made a gentle effort to rouse the driver. It seems he was in a deep sleep, but they were able to awaken him without too much fuss. After ensuring the vehicle was secure, they conducted a search inside. To their surprise, they found a stash of illegal substances. They seized noticeable quantities of both Fentanyl and Suboxone, substances that have been raising concerns in communities across the nation due to their potential for abuse.

The Arrest

The driver was identified as Jonathan A. Layton, a 31-year-old resident of Kill Devil Hills. He wasn’t just sent home with a warning; instead, he faced some serious charges. Layton was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Felony Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance
  • Misdemeanor Driving While Impaired
  • Misdemeanor Possession of a Schedule III Controlled Substance
  • Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

There’s no getting around it; these are serious charges. A judge set Layton’s bond at a whopping $15,000, indicating the seriousness of his situation.

Support from Local Authorities

It’s important to note that this incident wasn’t handled alone. The Nags Head Police Department’s Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) provided assistance during the event. What’s a DRE, you ask? They’re specially trained officers who have a keen understanding of the specific symptoms and behaviors that drugs can cause. Their expertise is crucial in making accurate assessments during such incidents.

Community Safety and Support

Drug use and related offenses are pressing concerns for many communities, and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to keeping residents safe. They are actively working to tackle drug-related issues and ensure that everyone in the area feels secure. If you have information about illegal activities or suspect someone may be involved with drugs, they want to hear from you! You can contact local law enforcement at 252-475-5980 or the Dare County Communications Center at 252-473-3444.
