Roundtrip Flights From Honolulu to Hilo Canceled Due to Tropical Storm Hone

HONOLULU – On August 24, 2024, all remaining roundtrip flights from Honolulu to Hilo have been canceled due to the unpredictable Tropical Storm Hone, as per a recent announcement from the state Department of Transportation (DOT).

While the Hilo International Airport terminal remains operational, there would be no flights departing from Hilo for the rest of the day. The abrupt disappearance of flights is primarily due to the weather deteriorating at a pace much quicker than previously anticipated.

The Impact on Passengers and Potential Alternatives

One affected passenger, Moani Van-Alst Wright, stated, “The captain announced that the winds were stronger than forecasted, making it unsafe for us to fly. I’m now considering flying into Kona and then driving over – although safety is naturally the top priority.”

Southwest Airlines representatives extended their support to customers by promising flexibility in rescheduling any tickets with a travel advisory in place from August 24 to 25 at the following airport locations: Hilo (ITO), Honolulu (HNL), Kahului (OGG), Kona (KOA), and Lihue (LIH).

The airline also advised its customers to keep a close eye on weather conditions and regularly check their flight status for any potential schedule changes.

Advisories for Locals and Visitors

Additionally, locals and those visiting Hilo were provided with warning letters from hotels about the approaching storm. Foreseeing the potential risks associated with the tropical storm, hotels started their preparations days ahead of its arrival. “We’ve been preparing for the past four, five days. We test generators. We check batteries,” said Matt Pickett of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

Tropical Storm Warning in Effect

The current tropical storm warning for Hawaii Island remains in effect as Tropical Storm Hone continues its path westward. For the weekend, the storm is predicted to bring potentially flooding rains, damaging winds, and huge surf.

Members of the public and the affected travelers are advised to monitor the news and updates closely to stay informed about this ongoing situation.
