Community Remembers Patricia “Tricia” Rivera, Beloved Educator and Friend

Kitty Hawk, located in the picturesque Outer Banks of North Carolina, mourns the loss of a remarkable resident, Patricia “Tricia” Rivera, who passed away on October 9, 2025, at Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia. Tricia was a pillar of her community and touched countless lives through her commitment to education and the arts.

A Life Well-Lived

Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, Tricia lived a life that was rich in love and learning. She was the treasured wife of Jim Rivera for 52 years, a true partnership built on love and shared experiences. Together, they raised a beautiful family, including their son Mark and his family who reside in Central, South Carolina. Tricia’s family tree extends further with a loving sister, Penny Odom, a nephew and niece living on the west coast, and extended family in the Rocky Mount, North Carolina area. She also held a special place in her heart for her pre-deceased daughter Becky and brother Joseph.

From Coastlines to Classrooms

Tricia’s journey began when her family relocated to Oceanport, New Jersey, during her childhood. She attended Red Bank Catholic High School, demonstrating a thirst for knowledge that would follow her throughout her life. Earning a BA degree in Education from Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, New York, her passion for teaching bore fruit as she ventured into junior high and high school teaching in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Her interests extended beyond the classroom. Tricia was an integral member of the Rumson Players, a semi-professional acting troupe, where she graced the stage with her talents and even took on the role of assistant director for the popular production of “The Fantasticks.” Her love for performing arts was a vivid aspect of her vibrant character, which continued even after moving to Connecticut, where she took on the role of a front desk librarian at Wesleyan University.

New Beginnings in the Outer Banks

The year 1990 marked a new chapter in Tricia’s life as she and her family moved to the beautiful Outer Banks. Here, she carried on as a title examiner, working with notable companies including TRW and Stewart Title until she transitioned to being an independent examiner in the Hampton Roads area, eventually retiring. Tricia cherished the beaches, frequently found soaking up the sun or enjoying the local live music scenes. She was a dedicated fan of college sports while also nurturing her artistic flair as she starred in productions by the Theatre of Dare.

A Celebration of Life

While no formal funeral services are planned, the family invites those who knew and loved Tricia to join them for a gathering in Rocky Mount followed by a musical celebration of her life on the Outer Banks. The exact date and venue are yet to be determined, but it promises to be a heartfelt tribute to a woman who brought joy and inspiration to so many.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Tricia’s honor to The Mustang Outreach Program, which supports the education of young musicians. Those wishing to express their sympathy are encouraged to visit the family’s memorial page online, where heartfelt memories and messages can be shared.

In Closing

As Kitty Hawk pauses to reflect on the life of Tricia Rivera, we hold tightly to the memories her passionate spirit left behind. She was not just an educator; she was a friend, a mentor, and an artistic soul who illuminated the lives of those around her.
