Roanoke Island House Explosion Leaves One Injured, Home Destroyed
A house explosion on Dogwood Trail in Roanoke Island resulted in serious injuries and the complete destruction of the residence on Friday afternoon, July 11, 2025. The incident, which occurred around 3:15 PM, prompted multiple 911 calls to the Regional Communications Center reporting the explosion.
Emergency responders from the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, and Dare County EMS rushed to the scene, swiftly supported by additional units from Nags Head Fire and Rescue, Kill Devil Hills Fire and Rescue, Manns Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, and Colington Volunteer Fire Department following a second alarm declaration from RIVFD Chief Bill Walker.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the home engulfed in flames and confirmed that one adult occupant had suffered serious injuries. The injured individual was transported to the Dare MedFlight hanger at Dare County Airport before being flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Two ambulances remained on the site to support the firefighting efforts and handle any potential medical transport, but fortunately, no further injuries were reported among residents or responders.
The fire department managed to bring the blaze under control within approximately an hour, though crews continued to monitor and extinguish hot spots throughout the evening. The last emergency units departed the scene at 9:17 PM after ensuring the area was safe.
In addition to the house, the fire consumed three vehicles and one boat that were parked nearby. A neighboring residence sustained minor damage as a result of the explosion and the subsequent fire, but occupants were unharmed.
An investigation into the cause of the explosion and fire was launched by the Dare County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The inquiry is set to continue throughout the week as officials seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The destroyed house was a three-bedroom structure built in 1999 and situated on approximately two acres of land. The community has expressed shock and concern regarding the explosion, with many residents reflecting on the safety measures in place for homes in the area.
As the investigation unfolds, updates will be provided to ensure that residents are informed about safety measures and any findings related to the incident.
