KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC — The body of a 49-year-old fisherman, Carlson “BJ” Johnson III, was recovered off the coast of Oregon Inlet following a search that began after he was reported overdue. Johnson had set out on a fishing trip on May 14, 2025, and failed to return home that evening, prompting a report made to the U.S. Coast Guard at 9:54 p.m..

Johnson left Oregon Inlet with his dog in a 19-foot Maycraft boat between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. that same day. He was last noted to be engaged in his usual activity, which he often did for relaxation. The alarm was raised when he did not return, leading to immediate search efforts initiated by the coast guard.

On May 15, a local fisherman discovered Johnson’s body approximately two miles north of Oregon Inlet and two-and-a-half miles offshore. The North Carolina Marine Patrol proceeded to recover the body, which is now with the state’s Medical Examiner for further analysis.

As of Friday afternoon, there has been no sign of Johnson’s dog or his vessel. While reports about a found boat were received, none have matched the description of Johnson’s Maycraft.
