Exciting Progress in Buxton: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Restoration Moves Ahead

BUXTON, N.C. — Folks in Buxton and beyond have some exciting news to celebrate! The iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse—the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States—is currently undergoing some significant restoration work that’s been long overdue. If you’ve ever visited the Outer Banks, you know this lighthouse is not just a spectacular sight but also a historic landmark that has guided countless mariners since its construction in 1870.

What’s Happening with the Lighthouse?

As you stroll around the area, you can’t miss the towering scaffolding that surrounds the lighthouse, reaching nearly 200 feet high. This ambitious restoration project is expected to take 18 months to complete, and we’re already seeing some tangible progress. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore recently shared some fascinating updates and pictures showcasing the hardworking crews making it all possible.

Did you know that building the **scaffolding alone took** a whopping 60 days and involved more than 10,000 pieces of materials? That just goes to show how much effort is being put into this essential task!

Challenges of Working at Great Heights

The workers on the scaffolding truly have a challenging assignment. As one post by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore put it, “Life on a barrier island means living on the edge, but these brave workers are redefining the concept entirely.” The views from up there must be absolutely stunning, though, making it all worthwhile!

Protecting a Historic Treasure

You might wonder why this restoration is necessary. Well, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse faces harsh environmental conditions every day—including salt air, high winds, and relentless sunshine. These elements take a toll on the structure, and the restoration project aims to address these issues before they worsen.

The work involves more than just a fresh coat of paint. Crews are diligently focused on repairing vital components like deteriorated masonry, metal parts, windows, and even the beautiful marble flooring. One noteworthy change is the removal of the old beacon after an impressive 52 years of service. It will be replaced by a temporary beacon that can be spotted from an astounding distance of 18 miles. Eventually, this temporary beacon will be swapped out for a permanent replica lens, keeping the lighthouse as stunningly beautiful and functional as ever.

As summer settles over the Outer Banks, it’s a wonderful time to appreciate not only the stunning landscapes but also the hard work that’s going into maintaining the region’s rich history. We can’t wait to see the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse looking pristine once again!

This restoration project not only gives the lighthouse a little TLC but also shows the commitment to preserving the beauty and history that make the Outer Banks so special. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s a palpable excitement in the air as we watch this beloved landmark return to its former glory!
