SALVO, N.C. — One person died and two others were taken to the hospital after three people got into trouble in the Atlantic Ocean near Salvo on Thursday afternoon, Dare County officials said.

The first emergency call came in Thursday, Nov. 5, at 12:42 p.m. Park rangers, sheriff deputies, county paramedics and a volunteer water rescue squad were dispatched to the surf line about a mile north of Ramp 23, which is the closest beach ramp to the village.

When Chicamacomico Banks Water Rescue crews arrived, all three people were already out of the water and a bystander was doing CPR on one of them. Rescuers took over, but that person could not be revived.

The other two were loaded into ambulances and driven to the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head. Their conditions were not released. Between eight and 10 rescuers responded, along with three ambulances and a supervisor in a quick response vehicle.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore said it knew of no hazards in the area at the time beyond strong waves and currents. Under park policy the identity is held for three days, so the name of the person who died is expected Monday, Nov. 9.

Salvo sits at the south end of the Tri-Villages area on NC-12 on northern Hatteras Island. The Outer Banks Hospital is the sole inpatient care facility on the islands, so serious injuries on Hatteras Island often mean a long ambulance ride north.

Salvo and its neighbors Rodanthe and Waves form the Tri-Villages, a stretch of northern Hatteras Island with both oceanfront and soundfront access. Visitors heading into the surf this fall should watch for strong currents and swim near others who can call for help.
