MANTEO, N.C. — Green lights will be showing up across the Outer Banks this month as Dare County asks homes and businesses to honor local veterans in the week leading up to Veterans Day.

The county is taking part in Operation Green Light, a National Association of Counties program, from Wednesday, Nov. 4, through Wednesday, Nov. 11. Commissioners backed the effort with a unanimous resolution at their October meeting, making this the fourth year in a row Dare County has signed on.

The idea is simple. A green bulb on a porch or storefront tells veterans they are noticed and valued, and it also draws attention to the struggles some face after they leave the service. The national program also aims to link veterans with help offered through local, state and federal programs. About 3,200 veterans live in Dare County.

County crews from the Public Works buildings and grounds division are lighting a long list of public sites. In Manteo that includes the Dare County Administration Building at 954 Marshall C. Collins Dr., the Justice Center next door and the Emergency Operations Center at 370 Airport Road. In Kill Devil Hills, the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center at 300 Mustian St. and the town hall will glow green, along with Nags Head Town Hall, the Hatteras Library and the Fessenden Center in Buxton.

Residents who put up their own display can send a photo to the county by Monday, Nov. 9. Those snapshots will be gathered into a slideshow tribute to local veterans the next day. The official observance ends on Veterans Day, but anyone who wants to keep the lights on longer is welcome to.
